Hi,
Im doing a lecture in a few weeks about straight edge and the poeple involved in it. So I just want to ask you a few questions about you and your lifestyle.
1. Where do you live?[/qute]
Just outside DC
2. How would you describe your scene, comparing it to other scenes?
I found the people round here takethemselves very seriously, and aren't terribly welcoming or friendly. it was a big change from the Scene round Leeds / Bradford in the UK.
3. What means straight edge for you?
Thats a tough one, to answer in less than 10 pages! I guess for me it's about being real, not having to hide behind chemicals to have a good time, hide from problems etc.
I've gotten a lot of inspiration from hardcore, When I stopped drinking, etc it was like a cloud lifted, and things were clearer. I think there is far too much relience on drugs in our society.
4. How did get involved in sXe?
I spent a few years with the choice to be sober, and eventulay started drinking and a few other things. I didn't really like it, and one day sat down and thought about how much happier i was without all that bullshit. I droped it all, and at the time I was listening to a lot of poppier punk and it was getting old and boring. I found hardcore, and that seemed to be what I was looking for. From there I got into sXe and never looked back.
5. Would you say that sXe is the right way to live for everyone?
I don't know that sxe is the right way to live for every one, but I think most people could benifit from living drug free. I think moderation would be a good way for most people to live.
6. DId you ever do any kind of drugs (alcohol/ciggarettes etc.)?
Drink and pot.
7. Whats the percentage of female people in your scene?
used to be a fair few, maybe 30-40%
8. Are there any differences between the scenes in different countries?
I think things are different from what I have seen between the UK and the US.
People look to the US alot in other countries, and I think thats sad. On the one hand it's where sXe came from, but it is far from perfect, and I think other scenes from around the world have alot to offer, and have things that are in some ways better than the US.
It would be nice if it could be come more world focused, and less "lets all imitate the US!"
I even heard a kid say that the UK scene was boring because there as much bulshit drama as in the US, and people in the UK have to make shit up to seem interesting.
I think the big drama is a weekness, and people might want to look at things that are different within there scene, and be able to say "this is a better way to be" Not "we must have drama cos America does!"
9. HAve you ever been mocked because of being straight edge?
Yeah, but never seriously. people have said stuff, but normaly in jest, of have been open to discuss and gone away less negative.
10. What would you consider the most frequent problems edge people have in common?
Misconceptions, and ignorance of the scene. Perhaps some feeling of alienation.
11. Have you ever thought of quitting straight edge?
Nope not once.
Hope that helps some?

1. Where do you live?
In England, about 20 miles southwest of Bristol.
2. How would you describe your scene, comparing it to other scenes?
Well I don't actually have a scene, unless you count England as a whole. I generally travel to where bands are playing, a few years back Southampton was a really fun little scene but the majority of kids there were uni kids so it kinda fizzled out after a few years. Swindon and South Wales have a lot of bands that come through so I go there a fair bit but I often feel removed from the general thinking of the scene but it's still great to see the bands. Brighton was also a fun little scene that just seemed to be about fun which is what I enjoy. Some scenes end up focussing on the wrong things, things that really don't matter or that negate some of the more fun elements - I know people that really don't want to go to shows because of the way some kids act, i'm not going to say any scene has more of this attitude than any other. It seems to be something most scenes end up with at one point or another I will however say that the north of England has always seemed more appealing than the south in terms of hardcore scenes but its always possible that its just the grass being greener ( i doubt it though).
3. What means straight edge for you?
Hardcore kids that enjoy themselves and have a good personal insight and as a result of this see no reason to smoke, drink or take drugs for pleasure.
4. How did get involved in sXe?
Through hardcore music, I found hardcore via the beastie boys after they did a cover of a minor threat song, I had heard of minor threat before but then the beasties covered "screaming at a wall" it was great! I found myself buying up a lot more hardcore CD's and I had moved away from drugs and drink and found out that something about hardcore and straightedge fitted in really nicely with my own views.
5. Would you say that sXe is the right way to live for everyone?
No, not at all. And a lot of people just shouldn't be straightedge, in my opinion a lot of people try to make themselves fit the criteria in order to be a part of something but I feel first and foremost, regardless of scene, labels, bands or anything, you should actually be abstaining because its what you want to do. Plus I don't think everyone could enjoy hardcore, if they did i'd be worried.
6. DId you ever do any kind of drugs (alcohol/ciggarettes etc.)?
Yes, I know about drugs, a little too much.
7. Whats the percentage of female people in your scene?
I don't see enough ladies at shows, but the percentage of ladies clothing in the scene seems higher than the percentage of ladies?!
8. Are there any differences between the scenes in different countries?
My only source on this is from what other people have said but it would seem there are differences, I mean theres differences in scenes within the same country but generally things are fairly similar.
9. HAve you ever been mocked because of being straight edge?
Yeah, but I mock back.
10. What would you consider the most frequent problems edge people have in common?
I really don't know, perhaps ignorance on both sides (people within the scene and those who aren't). Its easy to become closed off to some things when you focus heavily on others and thats when things are overlooked.
11. Have you ever thought of quitting straight edge?
Quitting? no, but I don't feel it will hold as much of my interest forever as i grow and my priorities change i'm likely to move away from a lot of it. But i don't see myself quitting, i have a lot memories tied in to straightedge and hardcore so quitting would be like quitting my past. I see people in their 30's still passionate about straightedge and hardcore and i'm headed that way myself so no plans on quitting.
12. Any other things you want to appear in my lecture...
thx!!!
No but let us know how it goes when you finish.

1. Where do you live?
Germany, Nürnberg
2. How would you describe your scene, comparing it to other scenes?
Germany aint that big. And i hate to talk about scenes. THose are usually just a bunch of friends that grow apart over the years. I`ve seen so many scenes come and go, i couldn`t care less anymore.
3. What means straight edge for you?
Being loyal to myself, and to never give in to alcohol, drugs and cigarettes.
4. How did get involved in sXe?
I was straight edge before i even knew, that something like that existed. I was sxe for 19 years already before i bought me the first Y.O.T. 7".
5. Would you say that sXe is the right way to live for everyone?
It would be nice, but some people rather walk the easy path. Being straight needs a lot of commitment.
6. DId you ever do any kind of drugs (alcohol/ciggarettes etc.)?
No never ever in what is now almost 38 years.
7. Whats the percentage of female people in your scene?
It increased a lot over the years. Probably a quarter almost now. But only a few active ones. Sadly most are only the girlfriends. And even worse most of them drop out of HC as soon as the relationship is over.
8. Are there any differences between the scenes in different countries?
Yes sure, but i guess pointig out all the differnces would result in a book.
9. HAve you ever been mocked because of being straight edge?
Oh yes. Usually by drunks/drugaddicts/pushers that feel threatend in their lifestyle/business. This sometimes resulted in the use of violence. Even though drunks/druggies are not really a tough competion.
10. What would you consider the most frequent problems edge people have in common?
I dont think there are any problems with being straight edge.
11. Have you ever thought of quitting straight edge?
No, why should i?
12. Any other things you want to appear in my lecture...
I just hope my english is good enough to make my point clear
thx!!!
3. What means straight edge for you?
Do you mean, " What does straight edge mean for you?"
If that's the case it means staying abstinant.
No Drugs, No Drinking, no "more" sex until ready. It also means staying away from all negative choices that i could make...or at least that's what it means to me.
4. How did get involved in sXe?
I grew tired of being a loser and being a nothing. I wanted to straighten up my life and get away from all the stupid stuff i used to do.
5. Would you say that sXe is the right way to live for everyone?
Yes, wouldnt i clean life be better than a life in which you woke up and you couldnt remember what you did the night before? Of course it is.
6. DId you ever do any kind of drugs (alcohol/ciggarettes etc.)?

No because I'm respected...mostly because im bigger and stronger than most.
10. What would you consider the most frequent problems edge people have in common?
Temptation and Taunting
11. Have you ever thought of quitting straight edge?
Never.
12. Any other things you want to appear in my lecture...
Just know that all edge people are not the same. And that straight edge means something different to every person. there are no set rules and regulations for being edge. It's what you want it to be.

1. Where do you live?
Raleigh, North Carolina
2. How would you describe your scene, comparing it to other scenes?
Well, I have yet to travel to other places but the NC scene is pretty strong. There is not so much of 'brotherhood' or unity yet, but there are a lot of good shows and good bands. Some people are doing their best to perserve the 'scene'.
3. What means straight edge for you?
Straightedge to me means being myself. I don't have to doll myself up. I just enjoy being who I am every day.
How did you get involved in sXe?
I have been in multiple bands for the past couple years and helped promote/book shows all around. I guess just over time I discovered that it was the right fit for me.
5. Would you say that sXe is the right way to live for everyone?
No, I don't believe forcing your belief's on anyone is right. Let everyone choose what they want. I think the straightedge lifestyle is very smart but it may not be for everyone.
6. DId you ever do any kind of drugs (alcohol/ciggarettes etc.)?
I had tried marajuana. I drank and I smoked cigarettes for a while.
7. Whats the percentage of female people in your scene?
Very very low. But then again, each show I go to, the more women I see. I guess you could say it is growing.
8. Are there any differences between the scenes in different countries?
I am not sure if I can answer this question because I haven't really gone to any other shows in any different country. I am sure there is the same bond between people, just different places.
9. HAve you ever been mocked because of being straight edge?
Yes, almost every day I attend school. I don't flaunt myself at all, but people at my school can not get over the fact that someone would not want to get drunk every weekend and sleep with someone they don't know. I don't understand why people can't get over it.
10. What would you consider the most frequent problems edge people have in common?
I would have to agree with Ed(straightXed) by saying ignorance on both sides.
11. Have you ever thought of quitting straight edge?
Everyone tells me that I will give it up when I get older but I plan on maintaining discipline until I die. It may seem stupid but it is what I believe.
12. Any other things you want to appear in my lecture...
I don't have anything but good luck.
