sure they coined the term, but they were part of an anti-drugs/promisquity "movement", i guess you would call it, before they named it straight edge. its not like they came up with the idea to not drink or do drugs.

how can you say that they are? Point to me their involvement past 1982. Minor threat wrote a song, a bunch of other people turned it into a movement, and youth of today was far more influential to straight edge than minor threat was, because if there was no yot, there most likely wouldn't be straight edge today.

Its funny, i mean minor threat members don't even want anything to do with straightedge because they weren't wanting to make a movement at all yet people still attribute it to them.

as far as influencing people to get into hardcore...i'd say minor threat has always been a logical first step for people just getting into hardcore and straight edge. so perhaps they have influenced the greatest number of people to get into straight edge... i think that has a lot to do with how accessible they were, predominately before the internet age (where you can find ANYTHING). in the days of yore, it was not so easy to find hardcore. you had to really seek it out. minor threat was one of the few straight edge bands that could be found in most record stores, therefore one of the first bands that people heard. so from the perspective that they have probably sold more copies of their records than any other 'straight edge' band, perhaps thay have influenced more people to get into straight edge than any other band.

i think it's difficult to quantify the actual influence bands have on todays hardcore scene. of course being one of the first, minor threat have influenced bands that have gone on to influence other bands... but so did ssd, dys, and the list goes on.

there is no definitive answer to this question...but i would say that todays hardcore scene seems to be more influenced by the youth crew era of hardcore than the early 80's... but the youth crew was influenced by the early 80's. so the questions remain.

i dont think that real hardcore gets people into hardcore much. so many people just go buy a comeback kid album or atreyu bullshit and backtrack from there.

as far as most influential, definately youth of today. Youth crew was just good music, i dont care if it was about edge or just everyday shit, it is deff the best kind of hardcore imo.

I love Minor Threat ... however, This is kinda' like the whole, 'who started punk' question ... it doesn't have a definitive answer ... and I don't know that it needs to be answered ... Lots of bands and people did their part to make sXe what it is today ... besides ... any number of random kids could have contributed just as much to Edge as any band touring in the 80's and 90's ... we'll never know ... that’s my thought on the matter ...

even though Minor Threat coined the official term we use and stand behind ... it doesn't make them the most influential band in the movement ... it just makes them a founder in something bigger then they could have ever imagined ...
