Ok, I know this has been covered a couple different times, but I'm just trying to get an opinion on a situation that has recently come up. While visiting a doctor about a problem with memory retention and a possibility of adult ADD, said doctor felt their was another answer to said problem. Sleep deprivation. After questioning me about my daily routines and why on average I only sleep between 3 to 4 hours a night, he decided to prescribe something I'm a little iffy about called Provigil. Rather than prescribe a sleep aid this eliminates the side effects of not sleeping. When I asked him if this was basicly a caffeine supplement, he stated no, that it targets different areas of the brain and has a slower let down then caffeine. I've yet to try it and it has me a little concerned. I'm not asking whether this breaks edge or not, I just want to get someone elses opinion on whether this even seems...well,safe.

maybe you should try going to another doctor. you can then show him/her the prescription/meds the doctor had given you and basically get a second opinion.
especially if you're a little iffy about the prescription...
but be careful of ego-stroking doctors that will just say "oh that doc. doesn't know what they are talking about" just to medicate you.
although there are people on these forums that deny this would happen just for the sake of arguing, doctors are only human..
but then again, these same people would tell you just to take it since it's been "scientifically tested" by some asshole with a PhD.
peace.

You realise that if it is scientifically tested, it wouldnt have been tested by somebody with a PhD right? It would have been tested by somebody with an M.D. or a scientist.

yeah why trust medical science when you can take things made up on endangered species and roots.
If you're iffy about taking something a doctor prescribed and they're not listening to you then you should find another doctor who is willing to talk to you and work around your concerns and find an effective treatment.

there's no point in arguing with him, he can't hear you through all the tin foil he has keeping the PhD's from controlling his mind while they are performing vivisections on kittens.

oh let me apologize mr. wizard. i wan't aware of the fact that people who posses MD's can not also have a PhD.
and now Scientists don't have PhD's?
and the PhD comment was in reference to another post. so more or less sarcastic anyway.

That was some pretty severe backtracking. You did not say PhD with the thought that a Medical Doctor would also have a PhD, because that is besides the point. I can get a PhD in politics and by that last comment of yours that makes me qualified to scientifically test medical products. You made an incorrect statement and now you are trying to justify it.

I agree with a small fraction of what Tahir said.
Try speaking with your doctor more and if you still aren't happy try get a second doctors opinion. If your doctor or both doctors give you the answers your looking for and your happy with that then you go ahead and start taking your medication.

being the research guru of medication that i am......i found this on webmd.com
Modafinil decreases extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders such as difficult/irregular breathing during sleep (e.g., obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome-OSAHS). It is also used to help you stay awake during work hours for people with work schedules that interfere with a normal sleep routine (shift work sleep disorder-SWSD).
It is not known how modafinil works to increase wakefulness. It is thought to work by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle. Modafinil does not make up for lack of sleep and should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder.
what i got from the first post was that u were having a difficulty sleeping.....or not getting enough so why would he prescribe something that would keep you awake rather then calming you down.....maybe it is the blonde in me idk but i think your doctor might b off his rocker

so that's why you call people "fruits" as an insult?
since you apparently don't understand the word, I'll provide you with the definition
Main Entry: ho·mo·pho·bia
Function: noun
: irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals

if it looks like a fruit, swings from nuts like a fruit, then it must be a fruit named rodrigo.
"fruit" wasn't an insult, i just call it like i see it.
i do not have an irrational fear of, aversion to, nor do i discriminate against homosexuality, or homosexuals.
i don't think it's natural to shoot heroin does this mean i have a "junkiephobia?" no it doesn't, i just means i don't think it's natural to shoot heroin.
i have known plenty of homosexuals, and have gotten along quite well with them. i have a pretty steady clientele of homosexuals and we get along fine. i do not treat them differently as i do not see them differently, you are so caught up on the "homophobia" thing that you are making an absolute distinction between "straight" and "gay" so that makes YOU The homophobe, not me.....
i do not think it's okay for people to "gay-bash" or whatever they call it now days, nor do i think it's okay to discriminate against homosexuals. i do however believe it is okay to disagree with certain "actions" and to just write somebody off as "homophobic" just because i view things differently then you, is just as bad as somebody hating homosexuals because they are homosexuals.
i tattoo homosexuals that call eachother fruits all the time are they "homophobic?"

the problem is that you idiots can't understand a fucking word anybody says. i don't know if it's a canadian thing or just stupidity, eh.
and the "clothing" thing doesn't matter, but can you honestly take anybody with a fucking WCC hat seriously???? you probably can judging by the way you look in your stupid fucking mug of a picture.
then again, you say you're not "straightedge" just because you consume drinks with caffeine.... you knitwit.

this is exactly like a someone saying something racist and then saying "hey, I'm not racist I have black friends". You are a homophobe, you do have issues with homosexuality and you do view it negatively which is why you used it as an insult. You might want to start accepting things and living in reality, I know it's hard and I know you have this made up world that you've convinced yourself exists, but I think you can do it.
