Heya, as you've probably all noticed by now I'm doing my sociology A2 coursework on straight edge as a subculture, and I need to conduct research on my own to support my other findings. If any of you have the time could you please complete the below questionnaire? If you want to keep it confidential, please PM or email it to me. My email is 25472@SCARB-6-FORM.ac.uk
Thanks.

Working/Middle/Upper Class: Middle Class.

Do/did you enjoy school?: Not particularly, but it isn't too bad.
Straight edge:
How long have you been straight edge?: 4 years.
Why did you become straight edge?: I wanted to better myself.
What does straight edge mean to you?: A lot. I like knowing that I am strong enough to say no, and back away from things that aren't good.
What part does hardcore music play in being straight edge, in your opinion?: Being Straight Edge started out with Hardcore, I think it brings it more together.
How many friends do you have that are straight edge offline?: A few. 2-3
Would you say that you are more active in the straight edge community online or offline?: Online. Where I live it just doesn't matter.
How do you feel about people being drunk/high around you?: I hate it, but it is their life.
How do you feel you are treated by people who are not straight edge?: Normal.
In Out Of Step, Minor Threat sang ‘Don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t fuck.’ How do you think these lyrics relate to straight edge today?: Still holds relevance.
How do you feel about the articles that describe straight edge as promoting violence?: It is terrible. Bringing down an entire community for the wrong doings of a few folks is preposterous, and shouldn't be done.

Basics:
Name: Connor Hallisey
Age: 17
Location: Andover, Connecticut
Working/Middle/Upper Class: Well, I think my parents are middle class. (haha, middle is a funny word...)
Ethnicity: White (Irish/German/English)
School/College: RHAM High School
What sort of grades do/did you achieve?: Pretty bad, F's and a few D's/C's, but I do better when I get to choose my classes (like I aced Web Design)
Do/did you enjoy school?: Sorta... I like seeing friends, I like actually learning (on the rare occasion when the teachers do their job correctly), and I like having intelligent conversations about the subject matter (especially in, say, Contemporary Issues, or Civics). I don't like authoritarian teachers that don't listen to their students & have stupid rules, and I don't like wasting my time on homework.
Straight edge:
How long have you been straight edge?: I don't remember, I think a little over a year.
Why did you become straight edge?: Self-control, self-respect, and because "I've got better things to do."
What does straight edge mean to you?: It means not participating in the willing/eager self-destruction of the human race. It means not allowing yourself to be pressured into conforming. And it means having a clear mind and not allowing yourself to fall into the self-absorbed apathy that the majority of people exhibit.
What part does hardcore music play in being straight edge, in your opinion: It's like the soundtrack for straight edge, the way it's used to express strong emotions that can't otherwise be expressed.
How many friends do you have that are straight edge offline?: None. The few kids I know who are sXe won't talk to me.
Would you say that you are more active in the straight edge community online or offline?: Online, there is no straight edge community within an hour's driving distance of me, and I can't drive yet.
How do you feel about people being drunk/high around you?: I think people are too dependent on drugs, i.e. how sXe's are boring because "how do you have fun without the drugs?" I think that "social drinking" is an oxymoron.
How do you feel you are treated by people who are not straight edge?: Occasionally I'll meet someone who finds it admirable, but mostly people hate it. There's one other straight edge in my school, the rest are the exact opposite. They make fun of me for it a lot, constantly saying things like "doesn't your straight edge oath ban you from sugar?" and even quoting studies that say that looking at cats makes you happy, and "that changes your brain chemistry so you can't play with cats" and just taking it way too far. I've even had teachers pressure me into drinking. As much as I try not to, I sometimes find myself becoming more and more militant to combat this.
In Out Of Step, Minor Threat sang ‘Don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t fuck.’ How do you think these lyrics relate to straight edge today?: Those lyrics describe the basic sXe but there's more now like vegan straight edge and for some reason people tend to ignore the "don't fuck" part which pisses me off.
How do you feel about the articles that describe straight edge as promoting violence?: I don't believe that sXe causes people to be violent. I think American culture causes people to be violent more than anything else.
Beliefs:
(For Males) How do you feel that women are treated in straight edge?: I haven't had any personal experience with which to make a decision on this subject.
How does straight edge relate to promiscuous sex?: Promiscuity isn't cool.
How does straight edge relate to the use of caffeine?: It's fine to a point.
How does straight edge relate to your political views?: Actually kinda goes against them in a way, because as an anarchist I implicitly support legalization. But, my revolutionary beliefs are also part of why I'm edge, because I want to have a clear mind.
