So this is an interesting thought. I've heard people argue for years and I know where I stand on the issue but bands like Black Flag, The Misfits, Bad Brains..... punk ? or hardcore? Your thoughts and opinions people.

hmmm.
The Misfits. I'd consider them a punk band, even though I met a guy, who was all about these obscure bands I've only knew from their name (Sigue Sigue Sputnik and others.), and he gave me this big lecture about the genre. He said these bands are not punk (no politics involved, but that's argueable, because there are/were shitloads of bands with non political lyrics), they are DEATH ROCK. I found this funny, and inappropriate.
I never thought about the misfits as a hardcore band, and was surprised people were complaining about them left out from the American Hardcore dvd.(however, they were in the book) I just think musically they are closer to punk.
Black Flag was definitely a hardcore band, with diy punk ethics.
bad brains was a punk band, and became one of the first bands to be called hardcore, because of the distinguished style they played. Same can be said about Middle Class.
That's my two cents.

Bad Brains were a hardcore band, this isn't including the crazy times when they played some far out reggae, but yeah they influenced a hell of alot of early hardcore bands in the early 80's aswell. Black Flag I would say were definately a hardcore band too. Misfits, I know very little about, and to be honest I have barely ever listened to them so I couldn't say.

This is true Dini, I reckon the debate of whether they were a punk or hardcore band comes up because they were around when "hardcore" was un heard of.

don't count their influence, because then one could say DK was a metal band, because they influenced Slayer for example.

the bad brains were definetly harcore, or atleast thier first two albums.

don't some of use use the genre "hardcore punk" to describe bands, instead of just saying "hardcore"? that would be the perfect way to describe bad brains and the misfits, with misfits leaning more on the punk. and black flag is definitely hardcore.
