I've always thought I was straight edge, always resisted temptations, but a friend told me that I wasnt straight edge b/c i cut. Is that true?

it's not true, but it's also self destructive behavior that you should address.

1 - reasons not rules.

2 - why do you cut?

Just a quote. What it boils down to is instead of asking questions like "what's allowed in straight edge"? like it's a rule, maybe we should ask ourselves why we'd cut in the first place - the ups and downs of it, like anything else like smoking or drinking.

you need to find someone you can trust to talk about it and hopefully through some work find a healthy outlet for your feelings.

Someone told me that once too. I don't have my tattoos yet, but I was talking about them and they told me that having tattoos and piercings would mean that I wasn't really edge. I've always wanted to respond to stuff like that with, "and how recently did the book of Leviticus become the rules of straightxedge?"

Cutting is a hard thing to kick. I was never seriously deep into it, but I went through a phase of it in middle school. To be honest though, if you have problems with cutting and your friend put you down because of it. Sort of an, "you're not as good as you say your are because you cut," kind of thing, when I was in my phase would have made me want to do it worse. If it did bring you down into a "cut-mode" you should probably let your friend know that bringing you down won't help you get over what you're going through. And on top of that, I completely agree with what Dusty said, find someone you can really trust and just talk it out. A good friend is a better fix than anything else the world has to offer.

i used to cut, looking back it was like a drug to me, a bad habit. i'm pretty sure i was addicted to it.
it's not like alcohol or drugs, but it is damaging and you can get blood poisoning.
do you think your addicted to it? if so, then it's like your drug.
but at the end of the day its up to you whether it makes you not edge. you should choose whether being edge means no alcohol, drugs, smoking or all of that + no addictive behaviour that is damaging. why not make your own edge, follow your own rules?
