Hardcore punk?
Punk rock?
Hardcore?
Alternative rock?
Anything at all?

I'm pretty sure it's hardcore punk, because I haven't heard of many bands outside that genre.

I think there are many, many bands out there that aren't even punk that are straight edge.

Hardcore is the only music that really relates to straightedge. Other genres that may try to associate with straightedge are missing the vital element that hardcore brings...hardcore is simply inherent to straightedge...you cannot have straightedge without it.

i can easily imagine bunch of guys, who maybe(or maybe not) grew on hardcore but are playing mix of alternative and ska.. so if they're not drinking, not smoking, not taking drugs and want to call themselves straight edge, they're not? for me, hardcore was always more a type of thinking than the music genre( as the music genre always evolves and some derivates are definitely not hardcore in the music sense)...

if the guys are still in touch with hardcore they can call themselves straight edge. but the alternative/ska band cant be called a straight edge band because its not a hardcore band.

i think the difference i see with what you say is that to me hardcore never was just the type of thinking, and has always been related to having a "scene" and participating in it, with a band, zine or going to shows. the sense and idea of building a community has always been important and i couldnt see it separated.

Well i am glad you can imagine it but removing the element of hardcore from it makes it something different, hardcore is a largely defining element of straightedge. I have played in ska and alternative bands myself and yes i am straightedge but if i were to use ska to talk about not drinking and stuff that would be fine but it would be removed from straightedge. Hardcore is the language of straightedge...not the language of being free from drugs but there is a difference. Hardcore and straightedge go hand in hand, the way it has elolved the history the current state of it is all related to the hardcore scene. If another genre of music spawned a similar subculture it would be relevent to that genre and evolve with the people and ideas within it. Starightedge and hardcore could even be given some kind of credit or nod as inspiration for it but it would be different just as hardcore is different to punk and the attitudes within both were different and spawned different ideas.

I kind of agree... I mean, a lot of things can be hardcore... even people can be hardcore.

What do you agree with? And in what sense do you mean hardcore? Are you refering to the music known as hardcore or as in being committed/die hard fanatical about something?

I agree with how the music kind of goes hand-in-hand. I mean, it really does.

A lot other cultures like Christianity don't call themselves straight edge because they're not involved in hardcore and punk music. They are clean because it's a form of expressing their worship.

So I agree that it has a lot to do with the music.
