so I was talking to my mother in law recently who starting talking to me about how all americans hate the british right now because of bp. And that obama hates the british. That somehow the american people are blaming the whole of britian for the oil spill in the gulf. This is insane to me. No one I know blames anyone other than the corporate entity of BP, Transocean and Halliburton.
So I go and look at the classy rag known as the daily mail which talks about the hearings that were held today that involved the BP chairman. and this one line of the article really stuck out to me.
"In a streak of anti-British sentiment, Mr Doyle added: 'When you operate in our land and in our waters you are there because of the public's trust which allows you to be there, and you violated that trust.'

now for the life of me, I can't see a single thing there that's anti-british. I can see people being pissed off at BP but nothing at all to do with britian.
It's just weird to read the account in the mail and then read it in the post.

this shit is going to make my next trip over really fun if people actually read and believe it. I accept the fact that the daily mail is a step above a tabloid but what worries me is that it's the paper my in-laws read by choice and has some amount of influence over them.
especially since apparently it's not just the mail

and apparently the whole island lost it's sense of humor.

Its so embarassing, last night i was watching a political news pannel type show and there was an american representative on there talking about the spillage and BP and what i was hearing him say was about BP being held accountable and all. But somehow all the respected political journalists and speakers from britain were hearing him say britain sucks. It was really quite frustrating not to mention completely dumb...so unfortunately its not just the mail, the television has gone a little crazy over absoloutely nothing.
On a slightly different note...i just turned on the news to see what was happening right now with it and am immediately faced with blind MP david blunkett saying "i don't know how anyone in the current cabinet can look any of the people of sheffield in the eye"!

I think it's crazy, I haven't seen anything "anti Britain" over here, and feel that BP is being treated the same way an all American company would be treated.
I personally am saddened that this strange "anti British" angle is over shadowing the huge environmental and human devastation this disaster has caused, and the short comings of BP as a company, that went a long way to causing it.
I think national pride bruised is far less outrageous than delicate and rare ecosystems destroyed and generations of culture and life wiped out by this tragedy. I think the real issues should be focused on.

it's just so insane. Americans get shit when our government does something wrong, goes to war, does pretty much anything. No we get shit because an oil company had a hand in a major disaster and for being pissed at that company for it. It's getting harder and harder for me to not think a good portion of british society are a bunch of thin skinned crybabies. I just can't understand how any reasonable person can look at the coverage and think this is somehow a USA versus GB thing but the more noise they make about it and it will turn into one.

What does sheffield have to do with this? I thought they did iron, not oil?

i can't understand it either, our media here has gone even more insane than usual. Its getting noticably worse. I mean its like they have taken it as a national attack just because the company had britain in the title. Theres people even trying to compare it to north sea oil incidents, which while tragic are completely different. I really don't see any anti british sentiment anywhere, i see a bunch of people actively wanting to deal with a disaster and address those accountable for the negligence. How the hell does that get a negative spin?
I tried talking to people about this at work and all they could do was point to american companies involved with the drilling. Its like to hold BP accountable was somehow an attack on their brittish pride...its very odd, i mean i am not affilated to BP and i see them as just a company with issues right now. I don't even consider the country of origin to be an important factor in this. Its so odd, like people want to support a company that mess up but refuse to show their national football team any support as they havent one a game in a group where everyone has drawn. I swear the media here is properly insane right now!

Sheffield has nothing to do with it, i was just turning on the tv as i posted to see what the latest news on BP was. There was no BP news i just found it slightly ammusing that a blind guy was going on about looking people in the eye, but it has nothing to do with the BP thing at all.

man if this made sense I guess we wouldn't be having this conversation. I just hope someone on your side of the pond starts making more noise. There was one guy, Michael Howard that seemed to be kind of level headed about it, but everyone else, including Boris Johnson, are all fucking crazy.

Poor guy. he should be outfitted with laser glasses so he could be told when he is.
we're they dressed up as indians as they dumped the oil into the gulf?

For what it's worth, I followed all the URLs you posted and read all the articles in full and I failed to see USA vs UK theme either. No matter how hard I tried.
As straightXed said it's outright dumb.
