Okay. So I understand that by definition caffeine is a drug, you take it and it alters your body/mind. There are a lot of people here who wont drink caffeine and if they do its breaking edge. But I don't think having caffeine is really that big of a deal. I mean if your constantly drinking energy drinks thats bad regardless if your sxe or not. Or having like 4 cups of coffee in the morning. But occasionally having caffeine with out the intent to use it for its effects I don't think is all that bad. What do you guys think? I would also like to hear the perspective of a non caffeine drinker and there reasons behind it.
I am not writing this with the intent to criticizing, I just don't fully understand caffeine thing. No hateful post please, respect others and there opinion.

Well would an occasional glass of wine be something you condone also?
I personally see no reason to want an occasional caffinated beverage, i can get soft drinks that are caffeine free. Even if i am not drinking the drink for the effects of the caffeine i just chose to not consume it. Its the use of it as an additive that really makes no sense to me and see no reason not to decaffinate coffee or tea. If i was vegetarian i would not condone eating a steak occasionally based on the fact that its already there as it still would be supporting something i am against. Being straightedge is a stance against drugs and so adding a drug to a soft drink is definitely something i am not wishing to support. Its a stance, i hold a stance of alcohol which makes it quite clear that even an occasional wine is not something i would condone even if it were not about the effects if had upon me. As i wish my stance on drugs to be consistant i treat caffeine much the same, i don't support its use, i think its wrong and i cannot see a logical or consistant way to reconcile straightedge...a stance against recreational drug use, and the use of caffeine.

The real question is...is kombucha straight edge? if you are drinking it for the health benefits does that mean the caffeine and alcohol content (though low) are not an issue?

why would kombucha be any different than anything else?

i know a few straight edge peple who do drink caffinated drinks such as moutain dew and cola, but i personally think that if someone decides to be drug free they should cut out the caffene too as it is a stimulant drug. There are plenty of drinks without caffeen in and decaffinated tea and coffee taste the same as the caffinated ones so it wouldnt be hard to avoid it.

How far would you take the question of consuming/not consuming caffeine? Does it stop at caffeine? Or would it be extended to medication?

I don't consume any amount that can affect me. so no soda, no caffeinated tea or coffee.
does what stop at caffeine? what does caffeine and medicine have to do with each other? except maybe you're talking about painkillers that have caffeine in them?

Caffeine and medications are both drugs. If caffeine is not consumed because it is a drug, why not discontinue taking medications, regardless of whether the medications have caffeine or not? Medications alter the mind and body and so does caffeine.

they are but one is used recreationally and the other is medicine. One has no other reason other than as a stimulant, so I"m not really sure what point you're trying to raise here.

I am not trying to make a point - just wanting to get something clarified and you did that. Thank you.
So if a drug is used for medicinal purposes, then such use is acceptable? Would using marijuana be acceptable? Although it is used as a recreational drug, it also has medicinal uses.

If someone is using a drug that's prescribed by a doctor for the prescribed reason then I can't see why it wouldn't be acceptable.

1) What about drugs that have a strong potential for abuse, such as vicodin?
2) Also, I actually know someone (here in CA...figures) that has a prescription prescribed by a doctor for medical marijuana, for the prescribed reason of "dependence on marijuana" (hah!). He doesn't smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, and even abstains from caffeine (for health and wellness purposes). Would his use of physician-prescribed marijuana for its prescribed purpose still be breaking the edge?

if it's used correctly and under doctors supervision then I don't see what the issue is.

if it's being used to treat something and it's needed, then why would marijuana be any different than any other substance that's used for medicine? Straight edge is about avoiding recreational drug use. That being said, I'd have to question the point/creditably of a doctor who would treat addiction, any addiction, with marijuana.

I can see what your saying. I live in Colorado which is also a state were medical marijuana is legal. I don't think that the vast majority of people should be able to get medical marijuana. Its so easy to find a doctor who will write you a prescription for medical marijuana even when you don't have any need. I think that the only time you should be allowed to get medical marijuana is if your undergoing chemotherapy, have glaucoma or have migraines (and tried all the other drugs on the market with no success).

It's a point of debate. Some sxe people don't see the negative side effects of caffeine as being severe enough to cut it out of their diet. When I first became edge, I wouldn't even eat chocolate because I didn't want any traces of caffeine in my body. I've since then let that go and indulge in some vegan chocolate occasionally. Everyone has to have some vice, right?

depends on who's making it and how. it does however have the same caffeine content as black tea since that's basically what it is.

I don't see caffeine as bad to some extent, a couple years ago I accidentally overdosed on caffeine, that was bad, but even when that happened I still had control over myself, I still knew what was going on. I won't make that mistake again but I don't see any problem with having a soda with caffeine in it.

only if you smoke enough of them. smoking a single one every once in a while has no negative effect and doesn't make anyone lose control. Same can also be said for a single beer or a single glass of wine. etc.
The only difference is that society says that it's ok to use caffeine but it's no ok to use the others.

Actually alot of society says alcohol is ok, as well as (some) drugs and I've even had some people tell me tobacco is ok. I personally don't see anything wrong with caffeine. Straight edge for me is simply no tabacco, no alcohol, no drugs.

If the other stuff isn't abused, why are they bad? I'm not trying to argue with you, just asking you to honestly take a look at what you think and why.

I had a student yesterday come into my classroom sweating and all sorts of jumpy. This was not an act, he seriously had drank 2 Red Bulls for breakfast (the kid is 11 years old). When the nurse called to have him taken home, the mother said, "He was just so tired because he stayed up watching his little sister while I was at bingo. I didn't think it would hurt him." The mother was promptly lectured on the affects of caffeine on the central nervous system.

Caffeine being a drug isn't really a grey area at all, some people just choose to be hypocrites.
