so in robotics and animations there's a concept called uncanny valley. It's basically where you make something that looks really human, but just isn't. That it's so close, that rather than looking at it as almost human you think it's creepy and will become self aware and kill you and your friends. I'd like to see what kind of examples people can come up with for this.

Then there are the Na'vi in "Avatar," who have many physical human characteristics in addition to morphed features and tails. But they are also blue, creating a sense of "otherness" that may have made them less distasteful to viewers -- in other words, they were sufficiently un-human.
that reminds me of an article i read somewhere about a study where people saw in a video a hand getting hit by something and how the viewer reacted to the impact, but that if the viewers were white folks and they saw a black hand, the amount of responses were less.
how accurate would that article be? not sure, but seems related.

That's interesting, but I think it only shows to what great degree human beings can be conditioned to selectively experience empathy based on such rather arbitrary parameter as one's color of skin. It's somewhat scary when you think about it!
