then I don't understand the question. how can something that's identified within a subculture be overused by that same subculture?

i think my question most simply put would be.
does the phrase "xxx" in the context of straight edge life, necesarly have to do with porm, or sex, or is it simply another example of straightedge, as an image?

no link to porn or sex whatsoever. it's just another symbol. some people try and put meaning to each X as it symbolizes a tenet, I have a hard time buying into that whole thing myself.

I kinda figured it maybe came from the fact XXX is normaly used interms of hardcore, or yeally strong etc out side of edge, and that maybe there's the X's in edge, and hardcore. But I;m just guessing at why it might have been adopted.

this is where the whole thing started.

the dc flag with the stars traded for x's.

then it was just adopted as a symbol for all of straight edge.

i have an xxx tattoo. but i got it because xxx is the roman numeral for 30 and i thought it fit in with me turning 30 and being edge still.

but i just figured it was cause bouncers used to put x's on your hands so the bartenders would know not to serve you drinks. and the x's symbolize that yoiu didnt want it.

i'm talking about the three x's only.

you are correct about the x's on hands.
